The return of serve in pickleball is a crucial shot that can set the tone for the rest of the rally. A well-placed return not only neutralizes the opponent’s serve but also allows you and your partner to move up to the non-volley zone (kitchen) and take control of the point. Here’s how you can maximize your return of serve for a winning advantage.

Prioritize Depth Over Power

A deep return forces your opponent to stay back, making their third shot more difficult. Instead of focusing on power, aim for a return that lands close to the baseline. This gives you extra time to move forward while putting pressure on your opponent.

Target the Opponent’s Backhand

Most players have a weaker backhand than their forehand. By directing your return to their backhand side, you increase the chances of getting a weaker third shot in return. This can give you an opportunity to attack or force an error.

Keep It Low and Controlled
